Why you need k2 with vitamin d3
Vitamin D3 has gained a lot of traction as of late for it’s many benefits to our health. Vitamin D3 aids with bone health, our immune system, our mood, hormone health, so it’s no wonder everyone is looking to take it.
The issue is, many people don’t know you shouldn’t be taking this vitamin alone, and if you do then it could actually be detrimental to your health, not beneficial. The vitamin in question that you should be taking with your D3 is…..K2!!
But why exactly is this?
Vitamin D3 helps your body absorb more calcium, brilliant, and the first thing I mention to my clients when they worry about their bone health and then ask if they should take a calcium supplement is, what are you vitamin D levels, because if you take calcium without having the other nutrients like D and K2 then you’re asking for problems. So when D3 helps you absorb calcium where does it go? Well it can go to the bone, or even the soft tissues like the arteries, but if you take K2 with your vitamin D then it will help to transport the vitamin K2 to your bones and teeth, and away from your soft tissues.
Vitamin K2 also activates matrix GLA protein which helps with sweeping up excess calcium and depositing it again into the correct places in the body where we need them.
So, the final question is, how much?
First off I recommend people get a vitamin D check for free via their doctor to check their levels. Once this is determined I tell people to supplement, and start slow. 1000iu of Vitamin D3 and 50-100mcg of K2 in an MK7 form is good per serving that most companies do as part of an all in one supplement. You can then up this to double or triple it depending on your needs. Some people will find they need more in the winter as well and less in the summer because sunlight is the best and most natural way to get vitamin D3. After a few months at a set dose you can re-test the vitamin D levels to see if you need more or less.
Finally I rarely recommend calcium supplements as we get a lot if we are eating a whole-food diet with lots of variety, leafy greens etc, so focus on your D3 and K2-MK7 for improving your bone health.
